The Great Arkansas Clean Up
The Great Arkansas Cleanup began more than 35 years ago as the Greers Ferry Lake and Little Red River Cleanup. In 1985, then-U.S. Sen. Dale Bumpers guided legislation requiring an annual pickup event during the weekend after Labor Day on all federal lands. This law, the Carl Garner Federal Lands Cleanup Act, honors the founder of the event.
The Great American Clean Up
The Great American Clean Up is the nation's largest community-improvement event. Activities include beautifying parks and recreation areas, cleaning shorelines and waterways, handling recycling collections, picking up litter, planting trees and flowers, and conducting educational programs.
Arkansas has historically been one of the nation's leaders in volunteerism during this three-month community-improvement campaign by organizing 300 events across the state that involve more than 10,000 volunteers and 45,00 hours of donated time.
